We formed study groups according to local need and interest. These could focus on a particular psychodynamic topic, or on issues challenging the mental health field. They could be journal clubs or book clubs, or they could be “miracle groups” like the one hosted by Clara Thompson, MD in the 1930s, where clinicians discussed their most challenging and troubling clinical situations. They found that those treatments under discussion turned around and became gratifying success stories, so they named themselves “The Miracle Club.”
